Earth Day has its roots in the heyday of the original environmental movement of the 1960s and 70s. Just as the public started to become more wary of the potential long term negative effects that industry and development can have on the environment, the Santa Barbara oil spill of 1970 spurred a wave of public action and education. Since then, the environmental movement has steadily grown and its legacy can be found in households and businesses all across the world. It’s evident in the small things: the mantra of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and public policy pieces like fines for littering. You can also see it on a more macro level: a spike in sustainable energy production across the globe, and a widespread push to keep our planet safe for generations to come.
Moving forward from our forebearers, many companies, including Mysa, are making sustainability and eco-consciousness core pillars of our company values. The Mysa Smart Thermostat is specifically built to help people cut down on the amount of electricity it takes to heat their homes, and we get happy customers regaling us with their energy-saving tales every single day. Our future products will continue to focus on making sure that saving energy is intuitive and possible for people in all sorts of households. We’re in this for the long run, and want to help save as many kilowatts (or even megawatts) as we can.
Besides our philosophy when it comes to designing products, our company was born from a green mindset. Originally an energy auditing consultancy, we strive to help people make the right choices about their homes when it comes to renovations and efficiency.
What Steps Has Mysa Taken to Help the World Become More Green?
We applaud and encourage all sorts of businesses trying to innovate within the green economy and try to align ourselves with other companies, institutions, and organizations that are trying to make a difference.
We’ve mitigated our own carbon footprint by purchasing locally sourced carbon credits that account for all of our operations.
We’ve become a local leader in encouraging a more environmental-centric mindset in our home province of Newfoundland & Labrador.
So how are we going to celebrate Earth Day? As a company we’ve decided to do a few things:
- Minimize our energy use as a whole. Whether that’s walking to work or simply collaborating without screen time, Earth Day will be spent conserving electricity. As an internet based company, we realize that we can’t completely shut off but we’ll minimize any way we can.
- Sometime in late April/Early May, we’ll be doing the #trashtag challenge! We’ll try to clean up the beautiful scenery around St. John’s.
- And finally, we want to include our customers in this. So for every Mysa purchased on earth day, we’ll donate $10 to The David Suzuki Foundation an eco-focused charity founded by one of the most influential conservationists of the past generation, David Suzuki.
The little things can add up. If every company were to join us on our journey towards sustainability, we can make a real difference for the planet that we all share. Don’t take our planet for granted, help us celebrate Earth Day with real, sustainable action!
